Dutch truck charge, costs and truck routes
Since 01-07-2026, trucks heavier than 3,500 kg pay the Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing) per kilometre in the Netherlands. On these pages you can read how the charge works, what it costs and how a smart route and a sound trade-off help you pay less. The Tolmijden route planner calculates it for you per trip.
Dutch truck charge
- The Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing): The Dutch truck charge has applied per km to trucks over 3,500 kg since 01-07-2026. Who pays, on which roads and how the rate works.

- Maximum mass of the combination: For the Dutch truck charge the maximum mass of the combination counts, not the weight of the load. How to find it with F.1, F.3 and the manufacturer's plate.
- Trailers, semi-trailers and the Dutch truck charge: Do you pay the Dutch truck charge for a trailer or semi-trailer? No, but the maximum towing weight does count in the weight class of your truck.

- Paying the Dutch truck charge: For the Dutch truck charge you need an on-board unit and a contract with a provider. What the unit does, which providers there are and the fine.
- Exemptions and dispensations: Which trucks are exempt from the Dutch truck charge or can get a dispensation? Defence, refuse trucks, zero emission up to 4,250 kg, historic vehicles.
- Vans and the Dutch truck charge: A van (N1) up to 3,500 kg does not pay the Dutch truck charge. An N2 vehicle does, even if it has been administratively downgraded. How to tell the difference.
