CO2 emission class
The CO2 emission class of your truck
Every truck falls into a CO2 emission class from 1 to 5. Class 1 has the highest emissions and the highest rate, class 5 is zero emission and the cheapest. For the Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing) this is the most important value besides the weight.
How trucks are distributed
In the RDW open data on 11-10-2026 these were the numbers per CO2 emission class:

By far most trucks are therefore in class 1.

Class missing or wrong
If the data is missing, the vehicle gets the worst class, CO2 emission class 1. That is in the law and on the RDW website. The RDW website explains how to have a missing or incorrect emission class corrected.
A truck in CO2 class 2 or 3 is reassessed every six years after its first registration.
Driving electric
A zero-emission truck falls into CO2 class 5. See electric trucks and the Dutch truck charge.

Where can I find the CO2 emission class of my truck?
In the RDW open data. Enter your number plate in Tolmijden and you see it straight away.
Does the Euro class still count?
Only for CO2 class 1. See Euro class.
