Vans and the Dutch truck charge

An ordinary van does not pay the Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing). The charge only applies to trucks in categories N2 and N3 with a technically permissible maximum mass of more than 3,500 kg.

How can you be sure?

Check the vehicle category on the registration certificate or enter the number plate in Tolmijden. For N1, Tolmijden reports that the charge does not apply; for N2 and N3 it calculates the charge.

Heavy vans

A heavy van or rigid truck in category N2 does pay. Even if it has been administratively downgraded to 3,500 kg or less, it remains liable: the technical maximum mass then counts.

Liable or not: what is the difference?

An N2 up to 12,000 kg pays the rate of the lowest weight class. See the rates.
