Trailer and semi-trailer

Trailers, semi-trailers and the Dutch truck charge

A trailer or semi-trailer does not pay the Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing) itself: only the truck (N2 or N3) is liable. Yet the trailer does count, through the weight the truck is allowed to tow at most.

What does count?

The weight for the charge is the maximum mass of the truck plus the maximum mass of the trailers or semi-trailers it is allowed to tow at most. What is actually behind it on a trip makes no difference. See which weight counts.

Axles

The number of axles of the truck or the trailer does not count for the Dutch truck charge.

Different for tunnels

At the Westerschelde Tunnel the length and height of the whole vehicle count, so including the trailer. In the route planner you therefore state whether you are taking a trailer or semi-trailer and with how many axles. See Westerschelde Tunnel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay more if I take a semi-trailer?

Not for the Dutch truck charge. The class depends on what the truck is allowed to tow, not on what it tows.
