Avoid road charges smartly
Avoid the Dutch truck charge smartly
A route with less motorway can save on the Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing), but often costs time and fuel. Whether avoiding the charge pays off depends on your trip, your vehicle and what an hour costs you. Tolmijden calculates it for you.
How Avoid road charges smartly works
- Standard route: the fastest route for a truck.
- Less motorway, much less motorway and as little motorway as possible: three routes that avoid the motorway more and more, with the same restrictions and closures.
For each route Tolmijden calculates the charge, the driving time and the energy. The route with the lowest total cost gets the advice. You see it in one line: "Advice: avoid charges" with the difference in money and time, or instead "Advice: standard route".
What is it calculated with?
- Cost per hour for driver and vehicle together, € 40 by default.
- Consumption, by default 30 litres per 100 km, or 130 kWh per 100 km for electric.
- Diesel price: the average from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), or your own price.
- Driving time with a truck speed of at most 80 km/h.
All amounts excluding VAT. You can adjust the values yourself.
When does it usually not pay?
A small saving on the charge often does not outweigh extra minutes: at € 40 per hour each extra minute already costs about € 0.67. That is why Tolmijden only shows the comparison opened when avoiding the charge really is the advice; otherwise the standard route stays selected.
What is not included
Tolmijden does not include driving and rest times, waiting times, stop time per stop or ferry costs.
