Dutch truck charge

The Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing)

The Dutch truck charge (vrachtwagenheffing) is the Dutch distance-based charge for trucks. It has applied since 01-07-2026 and you pay per kilometre driven on the charged road network. The amount per kilometre depends on three things: the weight, the CO2 emission class and, for CO2 class 1, the Euro class.

Who has to pay the Dutch truck charge?

The charge applies to Dutch and foreign trucks in categories N2 and N3 with a technically permissible maximum mass of more than 3,500 kg. It makes no difference what you use the truck for, or whether it is empty or loaded.

A few types of vehicle are exempt or can get a dispensation, such as refuse trucks with the right bodywork code and zero-emission trucks up to and including 4,250 kg. See exemptions and dispensations.

Which roads are charged?

You pay on almost all motorways and on some provincial and municipal roads. Together these form the national charged road network: 19,248 road sections and 7,954.94 km. The Tolmijden map shows this network as a layer, so you can see which roads count. More on roads with the Dutch truck charge.

How is the rate set?

The rate per kilometre is the sum of three parts set out in the law: a charge for infrastructure, a charge for air pollution and noise, and a charge for CO2. Which rate applies to your truck depends on:

The number of axles does not count. All amounts per class are on Dutch truck charge rates.

Temporary discount and indexation

From 01-09-2026 up to and including 31-12-2026 the whole rate is temporarily 22.3% lower. From 01-01-2027 the rates of 01-07-2026 apply, increased by 2.6% indexation. Read more about the temporary discount and the rates for 2027.

What does a trip cost?

For a tractor unit with semi-trailer with Euro 6 and CO2 class 1 the amounts are:

Example: tractor unit with semi-trailer, Euro 6, CO2 class 1, maximum mass of the combination from 32,000 kg
PeriodPer km100 km on the charged network
01-07-2026 to 31-08-2026€ 0.201€ 20.10
01-09-2026 to 31-12-2026€ 0.156€ 15.60
from 01-01-2027€ 0.206€ 20.60

What you pay on a trip depends on how many kilometres of the route run over the charged road network. The Tolmijden route planner calculates this per road section, with the rate that belongs to your number plate. See calculate the Dutch truck charge.
